9. November 7, Reuters – (National) BTG unit pleads guilty in U.S. to misbranding, to pay $36 mln. Biocompatibles Inc., a subsidiary of BTG plc, agreed November 7 to pay a total of roughly $36 million to resolve criminal and civil liability after the firm pleaded guilty to improperly marketing its embolic device, LC Bead as a drug delivery device from May 2006 – December 2010 although the company told the U.S. Food and Drug Administration it would not do so. The agreement also resolved charges that Biocompatibles’ distributor promoted LC Bead as providing better therapy for certain types of cancer without medical evidence, and resulted in doctors submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare and other Federal health care programs.

• The former chief of the Olney Fire Department in Montana was charged November 7 after he allegedly embezzled more than $50,000 from the department between 2012 and July 2016. – Associated Press

The former chief of the Olney Fire Department in Montana was charged November 7 after he allegedly embezzled more than $50,000 from the department between 2012 and July 2016 by making unauthorized purchases with the fire district’s checking account, credit cards, and business accounts. The theft was discovered after the department exceeded its fiscal year 2016 budget by $25,000.

• Officials announced November 7 that construction of the new, $8.8 million Hope Mills Dam in North Carolina has begun following delays from Hurricane Matthew and other heavy rainfall. – Fayetteville Observer

22. November 8, Fayetteville Observer – (North Carolina) Construction back on track with Hope Mills dam. The Board of Commissioners in Hope Mills, North Carolina, announced November 7 that construction of the new, $8.8 million Hope Mills Dam has begun following delays from Hurricane Matthew and other heavy rainfall. As part of the project, crews built a new cut-off wall to decrease water pressure on the dam after Hope Mills Lake is replenished. 15. November 8, SecurityWeek – (International) Google patches 23 critical vulnerabilities in Android. Google released its November 2016 Android security patches addressing a total of 83 vulnerabilities in the mobile operating system (OS), including a critical flaw in Mediaserver that could allow an attacker using a maliciously crafted file to cause memory corruption during media file and data processing, a privilege escalation issue in the libzipfile component that could allow a local malicious application to execute arbitrary code, and a remote code execution (RCE) flaw in Qualcomm crypto driver, among other flaws.

16. November 7, SecurityWeek – (International) Cisco resets password on careers portal. Cisco Systems, Inc. prompted a password reset for all user accounts on its Cisco Professional Careers mobile Website after a security researcher discovered a breach in the portal that may have exposed user data including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and answers to security questions, among other application-related information. The vulnerability was reportedly caused by an incorrect security setting following system maintenance on a third party Website.

13. November 7, KOIN 6 Portland – (Oregon) 911 outage restored in Hood River County. Crews restored 9-1-1 service in Hood River County, Oregon, November 7 after an equipment issue knocked out emergency communications for residents in the Columbia River Gorge, Hood River, and The Dalles for roughly 36 hours the weekend of November 5. Officials set up an alternative emergency phone number during the outage.
