The medical center discovered the breach March 4, had the Web site removed from the Internet, and fired the vendor and its subcontractors. 27. April 29, Palm Springs Desert Sun – (California) Four-alarm fire controlled at Palm Desert Fairfield Inn. Authorities are investigating the cause of a 4-alarm fire that began in one building of the Fairfield Inn hotel in Palm Desert April 28 and caused $8 million in damage. The fire put the hotel’s second building in danger of collapsing and one firefighter was injured during the response. 4. April 30, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission – (Utah) SEC charges Utah-based retirement plan administrator with defrauding investors. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced charges and an asset freeze April 30 against the founder, president, and CEO of Utah-based American Pension Services Inc., accusing the businessman of losing over $22 million in investor funds through high-risk investments and then issuing inflated account statements to hide the losses. 5. April 29, Merrillville Post-Tribune – (Indiana) 2 indicted on federal charges of gift card, credit card fraud. 21. April 30, Softpedia – (International) 4chan hacked, attacker mainly targeted moderator accounts. The founder of 4chan stated April 30 that the popular bulletin board site was breached by attackers who leveraged a software vulnerability to gain administrator functions and steal moderator account names and credentials. 23. April 29, Help Net Security – (International) 99 percent of Q1 mobile threats targeted Android. F-Secure Labs released its latest Mobile Threat Report, which found that 99 percent of new mobile threats detected in the first quarter of 2014 targeted the Android mobile operating system, and that 277 new threat families were discovered during the time period, among other findings. 24. April 30, KNBC 4 Los Angeles – (California) Workers sickened by chemical odor. Authorities stated that 300 people were evacuated from a Verizon office building in Pomona April 29 after a chemical smell spread through the building. Five people were hospitalized after coming in contact with an adhesive remover in a construction area on the building’s third floor that was the source of the smell. 25. April 29, IDG News Service – (Florida) Florida commuter’s illegal jammer blocked more than cell talkers. A Seffner, Florida man was fined $48,000 April 29 after law enforcement and the Federal Communications Commission caught him using an illegal cell phone jammer in his vehicle for about 2 years to prevent people from talking on the phone while driving. The jammer also disrupted emergency services communications as well as police two-way radios.
