5. June 5, Associated Press – (Georgia; Florida) Banker pleads guilty to 3 counts in fraud case. The former director of the Montgomery Bank & Trust in Georgia pleaded guilty June 5 to embezzling and losing millions of dollars from the bank before attempting to fake his own death and fleeing to Florida. The guilty plea deal includes the payment of $51 million in restitution to the bank and investors, along with jail time. 18. June 6, Securityweek – (International) RIG Exploit Kit used to deliver “Cryptowall” ransomware. Researchers with Cisco Systems found the RIG Exploit Kit is being used to manipulate malicious advertisements being shown on popular Web sites in order to lead users to Web sites that attempt to drop the Cryptowall ransomware. 19. June 5, Help Net Security – (International) OpenSSL releases patches for critical MITM, code execution flaws. The team behind OpenSSL released security updates that close six vulnerabilities, two of which are considered to be critical. Users were advised to apply the patches as soon as possible. 20. June 5, The Register – (International) Security bods mop blood, sigh: NEW CryptoLocker zombies? We don’t see their kind. Heimdal Security researchers found that the number of CryptoLocker ransomware infections declined significantly since an international law enforcement takedown operation against the infrastructure powering the Gameover Zeus botnet used to spread the ransomware. The researchers noted that the weekly run rate of the ransomware dropped from tens of thousands to the low hundreds. Verizon customers in northeast Wyoming and Montana lost mobile Internet and phone service indefinitely June 5 after Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation Railway sliced a fiber optic cable while digging alongside one of their tracks. Repair is complicated due to the location of the cable being so close to the tracks.
