Washington State Route 169 in Maple Valley and a portion of the Cedar River were closed indefinitely by King County officials due to a landslide estimated at about 300 feet high and 300 feet across the base. Six homes were temporarily evacuated after debris temporarily dammed and rerouted the Cedar River through the residents’ backyards. The fire destroyed several homes, and forced about 2100 residents to evacuate the Texas panhandle-area. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Firefighters worked to contain the 3,000-acre Signal Fire burning in the Gila National Forest reported May 11 near Silver City, New Mexico. Highway 15 from Ben Lilly Monument north to the Gravel Pit near Wildhorse Mesa was closed and campsites and private property near Signal Peak were evacuated. 6. May 9, New Jersey State Police – (New Jersey) Five members of Bergen County theft ring arrested for $100,000 in fraudulent credit card purchases. New Jersey State Police and partnering agencies arrested and charged 5 individuals May 1 as part of a theft ring believed to have used stolen credit cards to purchase more than $100,000 in merchandise online and from stores in New Jersey. Authorities seized electronics, credit cards, $10,000 in U.S. currency, and froze a bank account after learning the suspected ring leader would purchase merchandise online and direct associates to pick up packages at various locations. 7. May 9, KSWB 69 San Diego – (California) Seniors lost millions in investment scams, DA says. Authorities arrested and charged four individuals for scamming 28 California investors, many of them senior citizens, out of more than $3 million through two companies, Masters of Retirement and American Equity Direct, by marketing phony investment contracts. Bitly enabled two-factor authentication for all its accounts on its hosted source code repository after learning hackers gained access to customer accounts from an offsite database backup storage, that was not initiated by the company, through a compromised employee account. 29. May 9, The Register – (International) Point DNS blitzed by mystery DDoS assault. Point DNS reported a high intensity distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack which knocked out all of its domain name system (DNS) servers for several hours May 9. 30. May 9, IDG News Service – (International) Rush to defend against Heartbleed leads to mistakes with certificates, patches. Netcraft released a report May 9 stating 30,000 sites that revoked their compromised SSL certificates after the Heartbleed vulnerability reissued new ones with the same private keys as the old certificate and that around 57 percent of sites vulnerable have not revoked or reissued their SSL certificates.
