North Dakota Waste Management officials reported March 11 that hundreds of tubular filters were discovered in an abandoned building in the Town of Noonan, in what may be the State’s biggest incident of illegal dumping of radioactive oil filter socks. 5. March 12, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission – (National) SEC charges Jeffries LLC with failing to supervise its mortgage-backed securities desk during financial crisis. Global investment bank and brokerage firm Jeffries LLC agreed to pay $25 million to settle U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charges that the company failed to supervise employees at its mortgage-backed securities desk who lied to customers about pricing. A Jeffries representative was separately convicted in a criminal trial on several counts of securities fraud and other charges. 6. March 11, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission– (International) SEC charges animal feed company and top executives in China and U.S. with accounting fraud. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced charges March 11 against animal feed company AgFeed Industries Inc., and company executives for allegedly perpetrating a massive accounting fraud scheme that reported false revenues from the company’s operation in China in order to inflate stock prices and meet financial targets. The SEC alleges that a real set of financial books were kept hidden from auditors and that the fraud caused the company to report false revenues of around $239 million. 7. March 11, IDG News Service – (International) Chicago court freezes US assets of Mt. Gox CEO, companies. A U.S. district judge froze the U.S. assets of the CEO of failed Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox and two affiliated companies March 11 as part of a lawsuit against the exchange alleging fraud after Mt. 23. March 12, Softpedia – (International) Hackers can steal private WhatsApp chats with other Android apps. A security researcher identified a security flaw in WhatsApp that could allow any Android app installed on the device with access to the SD card to retrieve the WhatsApp database containing private chat logs. The database is encrypted, but a legitimate app that can decrypt the file is available. 26. March 11, IDG News Service – (International) Researchers attack secured Internet activity to mine personal data. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley developed an attack that could allow governments and Internet service providers to bypass HTTPS traffic protections and determine the Web pages a user has visited with 89 percent accuracy. Attackers would need to be able to visit the same Web pages as the user, which would enable them to identify packet patterns in the encrypted traffic.
