4. July 30, American Banker – (New Jersey) Check-kiting scam sinks earnings at Liberty Bell Bank. Liberty Bell Bank of Marlton reported in a quarterly report that it had been the victim of a check kiting scheme by a commercial customer that caused up to $2.1 million in losses. 5. July 30, Reuters – (International) SEC sues ex-Santander executive, ex-Spanish judge for insider trading. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged a former Spanish judge and a former Banco Santander SA executive with insider trading after the executive allegedly shared insider information with the judge, resulting in nearly $1 million in illicit profits. 34. July 30, Network World – (International) Shorter, higher-speed DDoS attacks on the rise, Arbor Networks says. Arbor Networks released statistics on distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack and found that the speed of DDoS attacks increased over those in 2012, but that 86 percent of attacks lasted less than 1 hour, among other findings. 35. July 30, Ashburn-Leesburg Today – (Virginia) Verizon reports Ashburn phone outage. About 1,100 phone lines in the Ashburn area lost service for several hours July 30 after a Verizon fiber cable was accidentally cut in front of Broad Run High School. Verizon technicians worked to replace 400 feet of cable and restore services.
