Over the past years I have never made a blog entry on
Federal Holidays! Now that I am truly
retired I am choosing to make my own comments on my blog on Federal Holidays.
I have chosen to launch this venture on Veterans Day as I
am a US Army veteran with 31 years of service.
I do not wish to bring notoriety to myself but rather to all veterans,
active, disabled, deceased, reserves or retired.
I have been fortunate that at 75 years of age I have not
been injured while in the active military or later in civilian life. I donate to many charities that support
veterans and I wish to bring a few of them to your attention. Everyone that I list are those which I
contribute to on a frequent basis. Please choose one or more and contribute to
them:
Yes, I
know that there are many others….these are the ones I support. Perhaps it is not clear why I support the
American Legion and MOAA….simply I believe in the American Legion and its
programs. As for the MOAA (Military
Officers of America Association), it is an excellent program for those that
qualify and performs a significant number of social support activities.
Why
the National WWII Museum? My father is a
veteran and I want him remembered for his service. He and I are founding members. You could also wonder why I support
organizations relative to those wounded when I was not…..it is because that
when the initial buildup of the Vietnam War took place the Army did not have
the computer resources to automate the selection. At that time I was a Personnel Sergeant at a
major training center and was chosen to make the selections based on the
criteria defined by Army and the quota assigned to the base to where I was stationed.
To
this day I wonder whether any of those that I selected were injured or killed
during their assignment. I will never
know as I did not keep a record of those that I selected. It was shortly thereafter that I chose to
pursue a career in information technology hopefully removing such a
responsibility from individuals.
